How do Cats and Dogs know which is cat food and which is dog food?

I have 2 cats and three dogs. One night, I ran out of cat food (the dry type) and my cats were hungry. So since I had dog food only and the shops were closed, I gave them dog kibbles. They’re more or less of the same shape and size and are made of the same ingredients – chicken. My cats took a nibble and refused the rest of the bowl, preferring to go hungry than eat dog food. The next day, i got them a fresh pack of made-for-cats kibbles and they immediately dived in and ate up. How come my cats knew what I gave them wasn’t cat food?

I also know of dogs that won’t eat cat food for the long run (not mine though, cos they’re pigs and will eat anything).

It would be good if a pet food manufacturer can answer this question. Is there some special ingredient you put in cat and dog food that makes cats and dogs know which kibbles is who’s? Also, nowadays, dogs are eating fish too – like salmon. You can’t say it’s the ingredient. How come they know the difference?

ok im just doing some research on dog food. I found one that my dog loves, however it’s going to be about .00 a month. (royal canin for boxers) then i found one at the grocery store and it seems to have VERY simular ingredients except for that the first ingregient was Chicken in the grocery store brand and chicken wasnt even found till the 8th ingredient on the expesive brand.
My real q is….what is "meal" like it’ll say chicken meal, fish meal. However the grocery store brand states CHICKEN for the first ingredient which to me is good.
I also compared the crude %’s and they’re very simular only off by a few.
Im prety sure rice is good for a dogs diet correct? and corn meal not so good? Because a lot of dog foods do have a lot of corn meal in the foods.
The brand that i found at the grocery store is PC Nutrition 1st…this may only be in canada.
sorry everyone i posted this under the wrong heading by mistake and i dont know how to change it

Eco friendly cat care?

Hi everyone!

I am currently working on a newsletter for the vet clinic where I work and was looking for quick input. The theme is "Going Green: Eco friendly pet tips" and will cover natural foods, biodegradable litter, composting, and other environmentally friendly products on the market for pet care. Any suggestions on what you do to promote a green pet (cat, dog, fish, pocket pet, horse, anything!) would be greatly appreciated. I just recieved the assignment today and would love to hear from as many of you as possible as soon as possible.

Tell me what you do to go green. Even if it just using recycled materials, I would love to hear and share your suggestions (with your permission – so if you post, it may be published, so by posting here you are giving permission!) with our community, staff, and clientele.

Also – is there one big area of focus you are interested in as pet owners? While the major article will focus on tips in general, I have a secondary and tertiary article to address a particular area of eco friendly pet care in depth. What specific themes would you (as a pet owner) want to know more about? Would you rather read more about natural diets, grooming, waste disposal, specific products.. etc?

Thank you in advanced for all of your ideas and input. If any of you are interested in reading the final product, let me know and I will link you to it (it is posted online as well).

Just as a note so no one gets upset – I will be posting this question under general pet, dogs, and cats to make sure I can recieve a wider range of answers!
